Description

Completed your PPL and achieved the minimum 150 hours required to continue your journey to become a professional pilot? Then it’s time to consider instrument flight training. Our Basic Instrument Flight Module (BIFM) will give you the essential skills for instrument flight rules in a single engine aircraft, and the first step towards your professional pilot career.

The BIFM is a short, three week course which you can complete from Cranfield in the UK or Orlando, Florida with our world-class multi-engine Flight Instructors. We also offer the opportunity for you to bundle your Basic Instrument Flying Module, Multi-Engine Piston Class Rating and Commercial Pilot Licence courses together at a discounted rate.

Accommodation

Sanford Florida: The Lofts at Eden (or similar), Orlando, Florida, U.S.A.

  • Apartments with shared kitchen and lounge. Shuttle service to Academy

Basic Instrument Flying Module entry criteria

To enrol on our Basic Instrument Flying Module course you will need to meet the following entry criteria:

Experience 

  • Private Pilot Licence
  • 150 hours flight time
  • Passes in all ATPL Theoretical Knowledge exams
  • Can be completed before or after your Multi-Engine Piston Class Rating

Age and height

  • 17+ to submit an application. 18+ to commence training
  • Height between 5 ft. 2 in. (157 cm) and 6 ft. 3 in. (191 cm). Applicants outside of this may still apply to our Basic Instrument Flying Module will need an ergonomic assessment

Language

  • Fluent in English (spoken and written)
  • Non-native English speakers must achieve level 5.5 individual and overall in IELTS or equivalent ICAO level 4 prior to start of training

Visas (depending on if you take our BIFM course in the UK or U.S.A.)

  • Unrestricted right to live, study and work in the UK (e.g. UK national, EU national with settled or pre-settled status)
  • If required: Meet the United Kingdom Visa & Immigration Service requirements to qualify for a Visitor (study for six months or less) or Student visa (study for more than six months)
  • If required, obtain / be able to obtain M-1 Student Visa for your flight training in the U.S.A.

Medical

  • Obtain / be able to obtain a UKCAA or EASA unrestricted Class 1 Medical depending on your chosen route. Read our medical requriements guide
